Ethiopian Enterprise Development Leadership and Staff Hold Discussion on “National Benefit and Geostrategic Positioning”

EED — Tikimt 7, 2018 E.C.

Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED) leaders and staff convened to discuss a policy paper titled “National Benefit and Geostrategic Positioning.”

Opening the session, Dr. Alebachew Nigussie, Director General of EED, noted that although our nation is endowed with natural resources and a resilient population, it has not fully leveraged those advantages due to recurring domestic and external challenges. He stressed that to overcome these obstacles and safeguard the country’s geostrategic interests, every citizen must take responsibility for preserving the national interest.

The policy paper was presented by EED’s Deputy Director, Mr. Abdulfeta Yesuf. Mr. Abdulfeta argued that any agreements or initiatives the institution undertakes must strengthen the nation’s sovereignty, security, dignity, and integrity. He emphasized that protecting the national interest should be a central requirement of all partnerships.

Mr. Abdulfeta further urged the creation of stronger collective arrangements to protect the nation’s strategic advantages. He observed that while the country’s natural endowments could benefit its citizens, powerful external and internal actors sometimes prevent the effective, equitable use of those resources.

The discussion highlighted that the country has lost some of its previous geostrategic advantages and the developmental gains built under prior national governments—largely due to internal and external pressures. Participants therefore recommended reinforcing national unity, restoring strategic stability, and making every citizen aware of their role in safeguarding national benefit.

Finally, the session agreed that, to raise the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the economy, the sector needs strengthened leadership and professional, sustained engagement—measures that should be prioritized as part of EED’s institutional objectives.
