
Efforts to Strengthen Manufacturing Enterprises Praised by Standing Committee
Addis Ababa, April 6, 2026 (EED) – Members of the Industry and Mining Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples’ Representatives have commended the ongoing efforts of Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED) to enhance the performance and competitiveness of small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMEs).

The Committee members, accompanied by senior officials from EED, conducted field visits to selected SMEs operating in the Oromia Region and Addis Ababa. The visit focused on enterprises engaged in agro-processing and engineering sectors, particularly those contributing to import substitution and export development.

During the visit, the delegation observed that SMEs are increasingly playing a significant role in technology transfer, job creation, and alleviating foreign currency shortages. The Committee noted that the contribution of these enterprises is steadily growing and becoming more impactful in the country’s industrial development.
The Committee members described EED’s efforts to support SMEs as encouraging and emphasized the importance of sustaining and strengthening these initiatives. They called for continued provision of tailored support to ensure enterprises achieve higher productivity and competitiveness.

Furthermore, the Committee highlighted key challenges affecting the sector, including shortages of production premises and limited access to inputs. They underscored the need for coordinated efforts among relevant institutions to address these bottlenecks and create conducive environment for enterprise growth.
The Committee also reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating the establishment and effective implementation of supportive systems that will enable the expansion of competitive and efficient manufacturing enterprises.

As part of the program, the delegation visited enterprises such as Chito Coffee, a coffee processing company engaged in export markets, and Tekeso Mechanical Engineering, which produces machinery for the domestic market, along with other selected SMEs.
