Consultative Forum Held to Address Challenges in Export Operations and service delivery
EED August 5, 2025
A consultative forum was held in Addis Ababa, organized by the Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED), aimed at identifying and addressing the challenges faced by small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMMEs) in the export process.
The objective was to enhance their participation and benefits in the global market by strengthening institutional coordination and addressing structural inefficiencies.

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Alebachew Director General of EED stated that the government is giving special attention to the manufacturing sector. He also explained that a manufacturing council has been established and is actively working to solve the sector’s major challenges.
Particularly, the forum focused on ensuring that SMMEs that export their products receive fast and tailored support, and that solutions to their constraints are addressed in a timely and effective manner.
The Director General further encouraged enterprises to organize into sectorial associations to get strength and effectively present their ideas and concerns. This, he noted, would enhance their visibility and help resolve their challenges more efficiently.

SMME owners attending the forum raised various issues related to access to production sites, financing, product standards and certification, cargo services and customs processes.

Representatives of relevant stakeholder institutions pledged to work closely with manufacturing enterprises to resolve these challenges and ensure that Ethiopian producers become more competitive in the global market.

During the event, documents were presented that assessed past export performance, future export plans, opportunities and challenges in the global market.

Participants included SMME owners engaged in export, Sectorial associations, Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopian Customs Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Development Bank of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Electric Utility, Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise, And various implementing and stakeholder institutions.
