New Industrial Opportunities Created for Rural Communities Beyond Agriculture

Adama, September 27, 2018 E.C. – The Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED) has announced that significant progress has been made through the Rural Industrialization Initiative, which is creating new employment opportunities and alternative livelihoods for rural communities outside the agricultural sector.

During a high-level discussion held to review the 2017 E.C. performance and 2018 E.C. plan of the initiative, senior officials from regional and city administrations, along with industry professionals, participated in the session.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Alebachew Nigussie, Director General of EED, stated that the Rural Industrialization Initiative is focused on expanding productive industries in rural areas by harnessing local resources. He emphasized that since the initiative’s adoption under the Hawassa 3.2.1 Framework, practical implementation has been underway and substantial groundwork was laid during the 2017 fiscal year to strengthen rural-based manufacturing activities.

“Beyond agricultural activities, we have created new job opportunities for rural communities in the manufacturing industry,” said Dr. Alebachew, highlighting that the initiative is introducing new livelihoods and demonstrating the government’s strong commitment to promoting inclusive and equitable economic growth.

Mr. Fekadu Aklilu, Coordinator of the Rural Industrialization Initiative at EED, reported that during the completed fiscal year, 381 small and medium manufacturing enterprises were established, creating 2,761 new jobs for rural citizens. He further noted that in the 2018 E.C. fiscal year, plans are in place to establish 1,713 additional enterprises, expected to generate over 33,000 new employment opportunities.

Building on the successes of 2017, Mr. Fekadu explained that the 2018 plan has been designed to be more robust and action-oriented. He stressed the importance of strengthening institutional frameworks, ensuring adequate supply of raw materials and skilled labor, improving access to finance, promoting community participation, and enhancing coordination for effective implementation.

Mr. Fekadu also underlined that the initiative is not only transforming the rural economy but also empowering youth and women by involving them in the industrial sector and improving their overall living standards.

Participants of the discussion recognized that the Rural Industrialization Initiative represents a major opportunity to drive Ethiopia toward a more dynamic and sustainable economy. They called for continuous monitoring, support, and collaboration to ensure its long-term success.

Regional representatives presented performance reports on their respective activities under the initiative, followed by responses to questions and comments raised during the meeting.
