Stakeholders’ Forum for Mabqat Program Participants Held in Dire Dawa

A stakeholders’ discussion forum for the Mabqat Program, which aims to create job opportunities for youth—especially women—through the development of small and medium manufacturing enterprises (SMMEs), was successfully held in Dire Dawa.

Opening the event, Mrs. Muluka Mohammed, Head of the Dire Dawa Finance and Economic Development Bureau, emphasized the Administration’s strong commitment to making Dire Dawa a leading industrial hub not only in Ethiopia but across Eastern Africa. She noted that the city is working closely with partners under the Ethiopia Tamrit Initiative to drive meaningful industrial transformation.

Dr. Alebachew Nigussie, Director General of the Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED), highlighted that the Mabqat Program targets 6,355 manufacturing enterprises and seeks to create job opportunities for more than 241,696 youth. The program supports enterprises operating in five key manufacturing sub-sectors and also encourages new business formation in the waste recycling industry.

Dr. Alebachew stressed that the forum plays a crucial role in ensuring effective program implementation, improving enterprise support systems, and enhancing benefits for youth and women. He also called on all partners to strengthen collaboration and support the program with a strong sense of ownership.

The Mabqat Program is being implemented jointly by PETCO Ethiopia, the MasterCard Foundation, Ethiopian Enterprise Development, and CAWEE, with a focus on empowering youth—particularly women—through enterprise growth and job creation in the manufacturing sector.

The forum brought together senior and mid-level leaders from EED, officials from PETCO, Ethiopia and CAWEE, and program coordinators from various regions, zones, and cities, along with other key stakeholders.
