EED Trained SMEs to Meet National and International Product Quality Standards

Ethiopian Enterprise Development (EED) was conducted a specialized training session on documentation preparation and management for small and medium manufacturing enterprises across various sub-sectors to help them attain formal Product Certification.

EED has been implementing various initiatives to enhance the productivity and quality standards of small and medium manufacturing enterprises. These efforts aim to enable SMEs to substitute imports, boost export volumes, and contribute significantly to national economic growth. Key among these initiatives is assisting enterprises in obtaining quality certification so their products can align with recognized local and international standards.

Mr. Solomon Gizaw, Lead Executive for Agro-Processing at EED, stated that the training was organized to build the capacity of enterprises by focusing on proper document preparation and management, which are essential steps for receiving product quality certification.

The Lead Executive noted that a baseline assessment was previously conducted to evaluate the current workflows and quality management systems of selected enterprises. The assessment revealed gaps in data and documentation management, which prompted the organization of this targeted training.

Mr. Solomon added that each participating enterprise will be supported in developing customized documentation tailored to their specific product types. EED will continue to provide the necessary guidance throughout the subsequent phases until the enterprises successfully secure their product certifications.

Furthermore, Mr. Solomon emphasized that EED will work on identifying manufacturing and infrastructural gaps affecting product quality, providing the required technical support, and facilitating connections with accredited bodies to help enterprises secure formal certification.

“The training, which was held at the Ethiopian Standards Institute hall, was attended by 24 small and medium manufacturing enterprises drawn from Addis Ababa and Sheger City operating in the agro-processing, chemical, and leather sectors.
